The fastest-growing racket sport in the world has now taken Great Britain by storm! While it was virtually unknown here until recently, it is hugely popular in countries like Spain, where there are over 20,000 courts and more than 4 million registered players.
Padel is a dynamic sport that combines the tactics of tennis with the lively rebound play of squash. Played on a 20 × 10 metre enclosed artificial grass court with glass walls and metal mesh fencing, padel uses pressurised tennis balls and solid, stringless carbon or composite rackets. The net is slightly lower than a tennis net.
Padel is typically played in doubles, as the court’s size and pace favour team play. Scoring follows the same system as tennis. Players can hit the ball before or after it bounces, and it may rebound off any of the court’s walls after the first bounce. Precision is essential—if the ball hits a wall before bouncing, the point is lost. With its blend of quick reflexes, strategy, and teamwork, padel is easy to learn and exciting to play.
Padel has many advantages that make it easy to learn and enjoyable to play. It’s more accessible than squash, with a higher-bouncing ball, and simpler than tennis, thanks to the smaller court and lightweight racket. The enclosed space also allows for longer rallies, giving players more chances to stay in the game.
Tennis and squash players adapt quickly, but even complete beginners can pick it up with ease and start rallying in no time. The game is fun, fast-paced, and social—four players on a padel court are rarely without smiles.
Pickleball is another rapidly growing racket sport, which is played on a 6.1 x 13.4 metre tarmac court, with a plastic airflow ball and thin solid faced rackets. It has been the fastest growing sport in the US for 4 years consecutively, and this popularity is now spreading to Europe and the UK. The 'kitchen' on a pickleball court is a zone close to the net where volleying is prohibited, which helps extend rallies by preventing players from rushing the net.
Pickleball can be played in both singles and doubles, with doubles being significantly popular overall. Due to the small court size and light ball, it is extremely easy for all abilities and ages to pick up a racket and have a competitive game, no matter the level, which makes it ideal for private houses, schools and clubs.
